Bhumi Ecosystems — Mumbai, India
Mumbai is not flooding.
It is failing to recharge.
The Earth already knows how to store water.
Bhumi gives it the infrastructure.
India's first NABL-certified engineered sub-base groundwater recharge system — combining NABL, international structural, quality and environmental certifications. Permanent. Ready for Mumbai's monsoon.

The Crisis
The urban water crisis
A city that drowns in July
and thirsts by March.
Mumbai's built surface sheds rainwater the moment it falls — into drains, into the sea, gone within hours. The aquifer receives almost no replenishment. The crisis is not a rainfall problem. It is a recharge problem.

6,000 construction sites extracting groundwater
Every pile driven extracts groundwater as a byproduct. Every litre taken is a litre not returned.
💧
Borewells running dry earlier every year
Steep drops in groundwater levels documented across Greater Mumbai. Pump run times increasing year on year.

Sponge parks failing within 4–6 years globally
Soil-based systems compact under monsoon cycling. The park stays green. The recharge stops.
The Breach Candy warning
Unmanaged excavations breed mosquitoes within 7–10 days. Dengue, malaria, chikungunya. Breach Candy residents experienced this directly.

Why BHUMIBLOC® Works
Why BHUMIBLOC® Works — Conventional vs Engineered
BHUMIBLOC® build-up shown is for representative purposes only
Conventional — What Exists
  • Shallow detention — water stays above
  • Clogs within 2–3 monsoons
  • No aquifer recharge — water goes to drains
  • Requires constant maintenance
  • No dual use — cannot bear vehicle loads
  • Zero independent certification
  • Performance degrades over time
BHUMIBLOC® — What is Possible
  • 500mm depth with engineered layers — no top compaction, water goes down through a clear filtration path
  • Inorganic — cannot clog. Cannot compact. Ever.
  • Engineered to divert the majority of surface rainfall into the sub-base system — reducing stormwater drain load by over 60% at site of installation
  • Zero maintenance — long-term certified performance
  • Certified for vehicular, heavy truck, fire tender and all rough surface use
  • NABL India + International — 28 certified test results
  • Permanent performance — Day 1 = Day 7,300
  • Depths can increase based on site conditions

BHUMIBLOC® — engineered from the sub-grade up.
Conventional permeable paving allows water through the surface layer. In most urban installations, sub-soil beneath is compacted construction fill. Water infiltrates the surface, stalls, and moves laterally into drains — not vertically into the aquifer. BHUMIBLOC® is different. Engineered from the sub-grade upward to move water to the water table. Depths can increase based on site conditions.

Sponge Gardens
Sponge Gardens
What the Science Actually Says
Sponge Parks That Stop Working
The Honest Assessment

Sponge Gardens manage stormwater. That is real and valuable — they capture peak rainfall and reduce drain overload.

But stormwater management is not groundwater recharge.

Plastic crates store water above drain level. Most exits through the outlet. Very little reaches the aquifer. The park stays green. The borewells keep dropping.

The Comparison
Conventional Systems vs BHUMIBLOC® — Physical Comparison

BHUMIBLOC® was engineered to do both — manage stormwater from above and recharge the aquifer from below. NABL certified. Permanently.

Every alternative manages water. Only BHUMIBLOC® returns it.

BHUMIBLOC® solves urban India.
India's Jal Shakti Abhiyan has achieved extraordinary results — now in its fifth phase, Catch the Rain 2024. Groundwater recharge nationally has increased by 15 billion cubic metres since 2017. Over 2.76 million recharge structures built — 176% above target. But every one of these structures is a rural intervention. Mumbai's built urban surface remains almost entirely unaddressed. BHUMIBLOC® is that missing urban solution.

— Guy McPherson
Common questions
What Mumbai residents most need to know.
Mumbai receives 2,400mm of rain every year. Why does the city still face a water crisis?
Because almost none of that rain reaches the ground. Mumbai's built surface sheds rainwater the moment it falls — off roads, rooftops, and compacted parks into drains and the Arabian Sea within hours. The aquifer beneath the city receives almost no replenishment. Meanwhile, extraction continues year-round. The result is a city that drowns in July and thirsts by March. The crisis is not a rainfall problem. It is a recharge problem.
Is Mumbai's groundwater supply secure?
Mumbai's groundwater is under continuous stress. Uncontrolled extraction, zero recharge from impervious surfaces, and rising construction activity are collectively depleting the aquifer. The city's water supply depends increasingly on Tansa, Vihar and Bhatsa lakes — but these reservoirs face their own climate pressures. Every surface that sheds rainwater instead of absorbing it accelerates the decline. BHUMIBLOC® addresses the recharge side of this equation.
How does recharging the aquifer help?
The aquifer is Mumbai's underground water reserve for generations to come and helps to reduce dependence on surface reservoirs and heavy Capital expenditure to bring water from far away lakes. Every month more constructions – more humans – more water consumption which can be satisfied from the ground below our feet. Recharge is the only long-term solution.
How much groundwater will BHUMIBLOC® recharge — per acre or per cubic metre?
BHUMIBLOC® has been designed to handle Mumbai's peak design rainfall (BRIMSTOWAD standard) = 100 mm/hour. Wherever BHUMIBLOC® is installed, the vast majority of rainfall enters the system rather than the storm water drains. BHUMIBLOC® has engineered solutions for all ground conditions with changing depths.
How much storm water will be diverted into BHUMIBLOC®?
BHUMIBLOC® is designed to capture rainwater where it falls – when it falls. Being engineered for an infiltration rate exceeding peak Mumbai monsoon intensity, retaining water based on the site build up BUT having a controlled release system which is based on the geological conditions prevailing in the area.
Will BHUMIBLOC® work given Indian working conditions and rainfall which are quite different than European countries?
BHUMIBLOC® was developed with both Indian and International technology integration and then NABL tested specifically for Indian conditions. Successful build ups carried out in the European countries were the guiding references for BHUMIBLOC® as a system to be engineered to perform under peak monsoon rainfall, contractor-level installation, and the thermal and humidity extremes of the Indian subcontinent.
Is BHUMIBLOC® a patented solution?
Yes. BHUMIBLOC® is an engineered system with a patent application filed in India. The system's design, material composition, and performance specifications are proprietary to Bhumi Ecosystems.
Is BHUMIBLOC® expensive?
"A thing is worth what it can do for you, not what you choose to pay for it. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it can't be done."
