The Urban Water Crisis · Mumbai floods and thirsts — at the same time
The urban water crisis
A city that drowns in July and thirsts by March.
Mumbai's built surface sheds rainwater the moment it falls. It runs into drains, into the sea, and is gone within hours. The aquifer beneath the city receives almost no replenishment. The crisis is not a rainfall problem. It is a recharge problem.

6,000 construction sites extracting groundwater
Every pile driven, every tunnel bored extracts groundwater as a byproduct. Every litre extracted is a litre not returned. Greater Mumbai has approximately 6,000 active construction sites operating simultaneously.
💧
Borewells running dry earlier every year
Documented steep drops in groundwater levels across Greater Mumbai. Fire temples in South Mumbai and housing societies in Kandivali report pump run times increasing significantly year on year.
🌿
Sponge parks failing within 4–6 years globally
Science confirms: soil-based infiltration systems compact under use and monsoon cycling. The park looks green. The recharge has stopped. Mumbai's conditions accelerate this failure dramatically.
⚠
The Breach Candy warning
Open water in unmanaged excavations breeds mosquitoes within 7–10 days — dengue, malaria, chikungunya. Residents of Breach Candy experienced this directly from the hospital car park excavation.
The solution
BHUMIBLOC® — engineered from the sub-grade up. Not just through the surface.
Conventional permeable paving allows water through the surface layer. In most urban installations, sub-soil beneath is compacted construction fill. Water infiltrates the surface, stalls, and moves laterally into drains — not vertically into the aquifer. BHUMIBLOC® is different. Engineered from the sub-grade upward to move water to the water table.
Sub-grade / Natural Ground Level — Aquifer recharge zone
Depths adjusted per project · Water moving downward to aquifer — not laterally to drains · 410L/m² · 80% recharge efficiency
Why BHUMIBLOC® works — conventional vs engineered

The Science of Failure · Soil-based systems fail within 4–6 years · BHUMIBLOC® has no degradation mechanism
The science of failure
Sponge parks that stop working. And the solution that does not.
Global research confirms what Mumbai's climate will accelerate: soil-based infiltration systems fail. The park stays green. The recharge stops. BHUMIBLOC® is engineered to be permanent — because its core is inorganic, cannot compact, and has no biological degradation mechanism.
Peer-reviewed science
"Urban green space soil comprehensive performance decays rapidly within 4–6 years. After about 10 years of use, its performance can no longer meet the requirements for sponge city construction." — ScienceDirect
Construction compaction
"Construction activity or compaction treatments reduced infiltration rates 70 to 99 percent in studied urban soils." — Journal of Soil and Water Conservation
China — ₹80 Crore. Still flooded.
Zhengzhou invested over $80 million to become a sponge city. When extreme rain hit in July 2021, the soil saturated immediately. Direct losses exceeded US$10 billion. Over 290 lives lost. In a designated sponge city.
Mumbai amplifies every failure
High water table, reclaimed land, intense monsoon, heavy footfall — Mumbai's conditions degrade soil-based infiltration faster than any temperate climate. A system that fails in 6 years in China may fail in 3 in Mumbai.
BHUMIBLOC® — no degradation mechanism
The structural panel cannot compact. The aggregate interlocks permanently. BHUMIABSORB™ is an inorganic engineered matrix — no biological activity, no compaction, no failure pathway. It performs on Day 1 and on Day 7,300. The 30+ year service life is not a target. It is a consequence of the materials science. Proprietary composition. NABL certified.
Why BHUMIBLOC®
Every alternative manages water. Only BHUMIBLOC® returns it to the earth.
The market offers several systems that handle rainwater — detention crates, geocells, rooftop foam substrates. Each solves a surface problem. None of them solve the aquifer problem.

"VYDRO solves rooftops. Geocells stabilise surfaces. Plastic crates hold water above the drain. None of them recharge the aquifer. BHUMIBLOC® is the only system that returns rain to the earth — NABL certified, permanently, at highway load."
Jal Shakti solved rural India. BHUMIJAL™ solves urban India.
India's Jal Shakti Abhiyan has achieved extraordinary results — now in its fifth phase, Catch the Rain 2024. Groundwater recharge nationally has increased by 15 billion cubic metres since 2017. Over 2.76 million recharge structures built — 176% above target. But every one of these structures is a rural intervention. Mumbai's built urban surface remains almost entirely unaddressed. BHUMIJAL™ is that missing urban solution.

Common questions
What Mumbai residents most need to know.
Mumbai receives 2,400mm of rain every year. Why does the city still face a water crisis?
Because almost none of that rain reaches the ground. Mumbai's built surface sheds rainwater the moment it falls — off roads, rooftops, and compacted parks into drains and the Arabian Sea within hours. The aquifer beneath the city receives almost no replenishment. Meanwhile, borewells extract year-round. The result is a city that drowns in July and thirsts by March. The crisis is not a rainfall problem. It is a recharge problem.
We have a borewell on our property. Is our groundwater supply secure?
Not indefinitely — and the situation is worsening. Mumbai has experienced steep, documented drops in groundwater levels. Fire temples in South Mumbai reported failing wells. Housing societies in Kandivali report pump run times increasing significantly each year. There are approximately 6,000 active construction sites in Greater Mumbai extracting groundwater as a byproduct. A borewell extracts. It does not recharge. Without active recharge at the surface, every borewell is drawing down a finite resource.
What is the difference between rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge?
Rainwater harvesting collects rain and stores it in a tank for reuse — flushing, gardening, non-potable use. The water stays above ground. Useful — but it does not restore the aquifer. Groundwater recharge returns water to the aquifer — the geological formation from which borewells draw. For recharge to happen, water must actually infiltrate deep into the ground. That is what BHUMIBLOC® is engineered to do.
What is the difference between a sponge park and BHUMIBLOC®?
A sponge park uses soil to absorb water. Soil compacts. Soil clogs. Science confirms soil-based systems lose up to 99% of their infiltration capacity within 4–6 years of installation. BHUMIBLOC® uses an inorganic engineered sub-base — it cannot compact, cannot clog, and has no biological degradation mechanism. Performance on Day 1 equals performance on Day 7,300. Certified by NABL, TÜV NORD, and RAL Germany.
Can BHUMIBLOC® be installed under existing surfaces?
Yes. BHUMIBLOC® is a sub-base system — it replaces the compacted fill beneath any permeable surface. Parks, racecourses, open grounds, car parks, highway medians, institutional campuses — any surface that can be lifted and relaid is a candidate. The surface above is returned exactly as before. The engineering beneath it is completely transformed.
Does BHUMIBLOC® require maintenance?
No. BHUMIBLOC® requires zero maintenance. The inorganic composition means there is no biological activity, no compaction over time, no replacement cycle. The surface above may require standard maintenance as any landscape. The BHUMIBLOC® sub-base beneath requires none. 30+ year service life — certified.
